NOTHING COMIC ABOUT IT! DESIGN OF COMIC BOOK HEALTH MESSAGES ABOUT TESTICULAR CANCER AND TESTICULAR SELF-EXAMINATION
Comics aren’t just for laughs! They’re the next generation of cancer awareness materials. Researcher Joyce Nyhof-Young at the ELLICSR Cancer Survivorship Centre believes that the light, illustrated form of comedy can be used as a great educational resource. In collaboration with a comic artist on faculty at Ryerson University, Nyhof-Young along with David Brame (assistant professor with the School of Fashion), Peter Chung (radiation oncologist and assistant professor with the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology), and David Kolin (medical student) developed a comic-style testicular cancer educational resource for men. The resource presents information about testicular cancer, known risks, signs and symptoms, and a how-to for testicular self-exams. This resource is illustrated and can entertain as well as educate.
The comic resource has been tested by healthcare providers, testicular cancer patients and their family members, and high-school students. The feedback already received has been overwhelmingly positive and researchers at ELLICSR hope to continue refining this resource and developing creative ways to educate and raise awareness about cancer.
