Nutrition

  • Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of gallbladder and bile duct cancers.
  • If you are trying to lose weight, be sure to do it slowly and safely. Losing weight too quickly or going on crash diets can cause your liver to release more cholesterol into the bile. The extra cholesterol may form crystals that lead to gallstones. Gallstones can increase your risk of gallbladder cancer. A healthy speed of weight loss is 0.5 - 1 kilogram in a week (1-2 pounds a week).
  • Diets high in vegetables and fruit can help you get to and keep a healthy weight as they tend to be lower in calories and high in fibre. Vegetables and fruit can also keep your gallbladder healthy. In the Nurses’ Health Study of 77,000 women, the women who ate the most vegetables and fruit (7 servings each day) had the lowest risk of developing gallstones that required surgery to remove the gallbladder. One serving of vegetables is 1 cup raw or ½ cup cooked, while 1 serving of fruit is ½ cup sliced fruit or a medium fruit (the size of a tennis ball).
  • Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar from our blood into the cells where it can be used for energy. Sugar and white (refined) flour can cause insulin levels to get too high, which can increase the amount of cholesterol in bile which can increase the chance that gallstones will form. Choose whole grains more often so less insulin will be released.
