Nutrition

  • High blood pressure is sometimes called “the silent killer” - it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, but there are often no warning signs. One in 3 Canadian men has high blood pressure and some of them may not know it. It’s important to have your blood pressure checked at least once a year, or more often if it’s high. You can lower your blood pressure with lifestyle changes such as reducing the sodium in your diet and getting regular exercise.
  • Most of the sodium we eat (75%) comes from packaged foods, so cooking meals from fresh ingredients is a great way to reduce the amount of sodium you eat. Instead of adding salt, use spices and herbs for flavour. Instead of using pre-packaged seasoning mixes that contain salt, make your own herb and spice blends.
  • Include potassium-rich foods in your diet to help control blood pressure. Potassium helps balance the effects of sodium and is found in foods such as beans and lentils, potatoes, avocado, squash and papaya.
  • One cup of raw cauliflower has only 27 calories, is a good source of fibre and provides 86% of the vitamin C most people need in a day. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help fight illness and infection.
