Kodachrome, they give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away.

For many of us the fall is a wonderful time full of colour and new fragrances. For others, autumn is a difficult, even a bleak time filled with grey, colourless days.

Facing the reality of my life with someone who isn’t afraid of my colourless days is part of my spiritual discipline. Working with a Spiritual Care provider is like inviting someone into the ‘darkroom' of your life; with a little time and the right tools, you can recover the colourful image on the film that’s just waiting to be developed.

Spiritual care isn’t simply an “it will be a brighter day tomorrow” pep talk. Rather, it’s trusting a Spiritual Care provider to accompany you in a healing process that honours the bleak times as well as the radiant. For most of us, moving from a darkroom view to a Kodachrome outlook isn’t instantaneous. It’s a process that takes time. There is a gradual shift from a grey and murky white to more and more colour.

I benefit from having a provider of spiritual care who is appropriately hopeful with me as I anticipate the return of sunnier times. UHN is blessed to have people like this at each of its sites.

  • If you’re having a wonderful Kodachrome day and would like to celebrate and reflect upon it, ask a member of your treatment team to contact Spiritual Care for you.
  • Having a tough day when things seem bleak? Why not make use of a resource that is here for you. Then see what develops.
