Nutrition

  • Love your kidneys by getting the right amount of fluids each day. Your kidneys help your body keep the right balance of fluid by filtering out extra fluid. Getting too much fluid can put stress on your kidneys. Most adults need 6 to 8 cups of fluid each day. You may need more fluids if you are losing fluid from sweating, diarrhea or vomiting. You may need less fluids if your doctor or dietitian has told you to limit the amount of fluid you’re getting.
  • Some treatments for kidney cancer may cause diarrhea, which can cause you to lose water and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. To replace these losses, drink fluids that contain sodium such as soup broth and potassium such as coconut water. Fruits such as mangoes, bananas, oranges and peaches are also high in potassium.
  • Your nerves and muscles need potassium to work well. Potassium can also help lower your blood pressure because it helps your body get rid of some sodium through the urine and relaxes the walls of blood vessels. High blood pressure may increase the risk of kidney cancer, heart disease and stroke.
