ELLICSR offers a variety of short-term to long-term research training opportunities for postgraduate trainees and postdoctoral fellows, masters and doctoral level graduate students, as well as undergraduate science and health professional students.

 

​ELLICSR Summer Research Undergraduate Program

The ELLICSR Summer Student Research Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of applied research in fun and engaging ways.

The specific objectives of the program are to enable students to:

  • Contribute to ongoing research activities at ELLICSR
  • Build research knowledge, skills and gain meaningful work experience
  • Facilitate professional network development
  • Get inspired and have fun!
  •  

    The program runs every year from June to August.

    Summer Student Research Program - Core Components

    Student Rounds

    The core component of the Summer Student Research Program is weekly Student Rounds.

    The Student Rounds provide a space for academic discussion and exchange. They include educational seminars and research presentations by ELLICSR scientists and clinicians, as well as student-led discussions. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to deliver a brief presentation on their work-in-progress.

    The Student Rounds will follow a training curriculum which includes:

  • Welcome to ELLICSR and the Summer Student Program
  • Cancer Survivorship and the Clinical Program
  • Patient Education and Health Literacy
  • Research Ethics and Debate
  • Maximizing your Literature Search Skills
  • Communicating your Research
  • Introduction to Quantitative Methods
  • Introduction to Qualitative Methods
  •  

    Workshops

    Six supplemental interactive workshops of approximately 1-hour in length will provide students with an opportunity to apply lessons learned from the Student Round sessions and develop useful skills. Topics include Motivational Interviewing, Literature Search Training, Interacting with Patients, Cooking on a Budget and Public Speaking.

    Research Day

    The Summer Student Research Program will conclude with a Research Day in mid to late August where students are given the opportunity to present their work to the ELLICSR community.

U of T students may be eligible to apply for an award through the IMS summer research program. Please note we are no longer accepting applications for our 2019 summer research program.

Graduate and Post Doctoral Opportunities

Our scientists hold graduate appointments in the Graduate School of the University of Toronto (Institute of Medical Science, Public Health Science and Health Policy Management and Evaluation and Nursing) and York University (Nursing). Funded positions for masters and doctoral students become available from time to time. If you are interested in exploring graduate research opportunities with us, please contact Dr. Jennifer Jones.

Medical Student Opportunities

University of Toronto Medical Students have a number of options when it comes to getting research experience. We welcome the opportunity to work with you to find a DOCH II project or support your CREMS experience. Please contact Dr. Jennifer Jones for more information.

Clinical Research Opportunities

Our interprofessional team of oncologists, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and social workers can provide a stimulating and challenging academic clinical placement in the Survivorship Program at Princess Margaret Hospital where we work in partnerships with patients and families to improve their knowledge and self-management skills. Our professional staff hold academic positions at the University of Toronto and have a strong track record in clinical and academic supervision in areas such as nursing oncology, physiotherapy, and social work.
