Nutrition

  • Pears are rich in a type of plant chemicals called flavonols which help improve insulin sensitivity. When cells are more sensitive to insulin, this means that less insulin needs to be released into the bloodstream. Lower insulin levels are desirable because they are associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers.
  • Eating pears may reduce the risk of certain cancers. The skin of pears contains cinnamic acids, plant chemicals that may reduce the risk of stomach cancer. In a population-based study, eating pears on a weekly basis was associated with a lower risk of developing esophageal cancer.
  • Cocoa is rich in plant chemicals called flavanols that help to keep blood vessels flexible, which can lower blood pressure. A few small studies have shown that cocoa can reduce risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes, but more research is needed. Choose chocolate with at least 65% cocoa to get the health benefits.
