Nutrition

  • Just ¼ cup of oats provides 96% of the manganese most people need in a day. Manganese is needed for healthy bones, blood clotting and fertility. It also forms an antioxidant in the body that protects against free radical damage.
  • Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps lower inflammation. Vitamin E protects cell membranes, brain cells, and other substances in the body that contain fat. Sunflower seeds are also a good source of selenium, a mineral that may lower cancer risk. In cell studies, selenium has been shown to cause cancer cells to self-destruct and helps repair DNA in damaged cells.
  • Flax seeds may help protect against cancer. Flax seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation. In animal studies, the type of omega-3s in flax seeds prevented tumours from forming and growing.
  • Both oats and flax seeds contain lignans, compounds that have antioxidant benefits. Lignans may help protect against hormone-related cancers.
