We love having guests in the ELLICSR Kitchen, especially when they join us behind the counter. They share their stories, experiences, recipes, and sometimes even fresh produce!

Last week we had the wonderful opportunity to have Tracy Torchetti from the Canadian Cancer Society drop by to cook with us. You see, The Society was celebrating the release of the latest edition of “Eating Well When You Have Cancer”, a booklet full of information to help you eat well during cancer treatment and recovery, including nutrition tips, menus, food shopping and preparing meals. The “Eating Well When You Have Cancer” booklet is one of the most popular resources in the Patient & Family and ELLICSR Libraries at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. What better place to celebrate its launch than in the ELLICSR Kitchen?

Some of the best ideas and helpful tips we share in the ELLICSR Kitchen come from cancer survivors who have lived experience with cancer. The Society shares our belief that cancer survivors have a special type of expertise that others can benefit from. The latest version of the booklet features 10 recipes submitted by cancer survivors, caregivers and volunteers that they found helpful. Isn’t it great to know that the recipes in the booklet helped other cancer survivors stay nourished in a challenging time?

Geremy demonstrated 3 of the recipes from the booklet while I shared the nutritional benefits and side effect management tips. Tracy shook up a delicious dressing for the Nut and Fruit Quinoa Salad, giving her best impression of Tom Cruise in the movie “Cocktail”. Check out the videos to see how we made the salad, along with Tomato Soup with Parmesan Crisps and Applesauce Spice Muffins.

Like the Canadian Cancer Society, we’re always excited to receive recipes from cancer survivors. You know what works in a way that even a chef and a dietitian need help with. We do what we do better with your wisdom!

Share your recipes, meal ideas and requests for topics with us. We will feature selected ideas in an upcoming class. Send us an email at info@ELLICSRkitchen.ca or tweet us @ELLICSRkitchen.

Wishing you a delicious and nutritious day.
