Let's Get Physical (2014)

 

On June 9, 2014, ELLICSR celebrated the 5th National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) to honour cancer survivors — anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.

This year's theme Let's Get Physical celebrates life after a cancer diagnosis through physical exercise and wellness.

Here's a look back at the day's events:

Words from the Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kerry Courneya

Dr. Kerry Courneya, an internationally recognized expert, professor and Canada Research Chair in physical activity and cancer at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, shares his research findings on the benefits of exercise during a cancer journey.

Panel Discussion

At the event, health experts discussed the importance of physical activity and provided tips on how to incorporate exercise into your life.

Panelists

  • Dr. Catherine Sabiston from the University of Toronto spoke about the different ways to be active and to find something you enjoy so you’ll be motivated to do it. Watch her speech.
  • Dr. Mary Jane Esplen, clinical-scientist, shared her expertise on how body image relates to exercise. Watch her speech.
  • Dr. Daniel Santa Mina shared his tips on implementing an exercise routine in our lives during and after treatment. Watch his speech.
  • Ms. Barbara Jenkins, a Princess Margaret volunteer and cancer survivor, shared her story on how physical wellness has impacted her throughout her life. Watch her speech.

Workshop Events

Some of the workshops that took place during the event were Food to Fuel your Fitness; Creative Movement with Canada's National Ballet School; WE-Can Move; Diva Flow Yoga and more.
